First Aid Skills Courses Recent changes to the national curriculum syllabus has helped assure further that first aid training needs to be provided to all school children. These vital courses provide lifesaving skills to young people that can really make a difference in their home, social and school lives. Here at West Yorkshire Medical Services we have been delivering these courses for a number of years and developed courses
that purposefully fit around the school day. We are extremely proud of our delivery team, they make the courses fun, exciting
and informative for children and teachers! We have first aid courses for both secondary and primary school pupils. The importance of young people learning first aid cannot be underestimated, as the recent BBC news item reported: Dorset School Teenager Saves her Father. We have devised 2 courses that you could consider - a half day and a full day option. We recommend the full day course to Years 4, 5 and 6 and half day to younger pupils. We use specially designed child friendly manikins for primary schools which we bring along too – “Flat Stan”!
Flat Stan is a bespoke made resuscitation manikin
especially designed for Primary School Children. So often children are put off first aid due to the look and feel of the Little Anne and associated manikins adults use, so West Yorkshire Medical (WYMS) has invested in these fun, cartoon character manikins. The First Aid skills course involves the following:
Pupils14 years old and over can do the Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF) Course, a nationally recognised qualification. The Head Teacher, Mrs Hazel Morrison at Bun-sgoil Shlèite (Sleat Primary School), Isle of Skye said, “To be equipped and be able to respond in an emergency is a very valuable skill and one that we were delighted to be able to offer to every pupil in primaries 4-7, thanks to Mike and his team and for the support from our Parent Council". WYMS can also offer first aid courses for teachers that can easily be delivered on teacher training days. Course are on the RQF and the Paediatric Courses are accepted by Ofsted. See our Statutory First Aid Page for more details. Following the pupils courses in Sleat, every teacher in Sleat Primary School will now attend a Paediatric First Aid (09/2018) and Emergency First Aid at Work Course (02/2019).
| Water Safety Awareness Courses for Primary School Children We have also developed a water safety course which will provide primary school children with vital life saving skills. Pupils will learn the importance of their own safety around water, others safety and what to do if someone gets into difficulty. We have designed our own drowning model which means we can simulate water rescues in the safety of your sports hall, sand pit or playground, saving money hiring pool time. These short but potentially lifesaving courses offer communication skills, social interaction and personal safety alongside confidence building with a humanitarian skill. Children receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the day. The Water Safety Awareness Course Covers:
